BEST PRACTICES:
Guided Reading Small Groups based on level and/or strategy? How many times a week? What is being taught -- decoding, fluency, comprehension or all three? Which program guides teaching? What are the other kids doing?
Kindergarten
Based on F&P (Each child will be in a teacher led, small group lessons at least times a week using “Strategies that Work”, and... During this time, children who are not meeting with a teacher are expected to...
Grade 1
Each child will be in a teacher led, small guided reading group based on strategy or reading level? . At least twice a week students will use and practice strategies for reading behaviors, decoding, fluency and comprehension. Teachers will re-teach the strategies as needed in the groups.
Grade 2
Each child will be in a teacher led, small group lessons at least three times a week where reading strategies are reviewed and/or taught.
Grade 3
Each child will be in a teacher led, small group lessons at least three times a week using “Strategies that Work.” During this time, children who are not meeting with a teacher are expected to independently use the strategy taught in the mini-lesson while reading text on their level. Students should record information about the application of the strategy in their notebook or on a post-it.
Grade 4
· 2 times weekly
· Small group based on strategy or level
· Guided or book club
Grade 5
· 2 times weekly minimum; students with greater need receive additional sessions
· Guided reading groups are based on strategy needed or F&P level
· Guided reading supplemented by book clubs
